研究人員應先辨明社會性別的哪個向度與其研究最為相關,並選擇適切的研究工具捕捉相關性。近幾年已發展出了一些能將兩種或更多的面向進行分組的研究工具(Tate, et al., 2014; Pelletier, et al., 2015; Nielsen et al.,2021)。目前可用的研究工具彼此間會有其邊際重疊之處,因此研究人員必須做出有所根據之選擇。有的時候單一個深入的研究工具或許會比較為全面但提供之輸出具較少差異者更為合適。具有交織性的面向亦極有可能有其角色。依據不同的研究問題,與生理性別和社會性別交織的因子,例如族裔或社經地位等,亦應納入考量。
